Scott Pilgrim

I left work early yesterday because I was feeling down and restless and went to go see the Scott Pilgrim movie. I wasn't really expecting a whole lot, just a lot of geeky in-jokes. I was actually really surprised! The move-making techniques that were used were extremely effective, and despite all the weirdness everything flowed very smoothly! The script is one of the best I've seen in awhile. In a lot of ways it reminds me of "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" or "Weird Science" or "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". It was really good! Watch the trailer, it's just incredibly fun! The movie was directed by Edgar Wright, who is the same guy who made "Hot Fuzz" and "Shaun of the Dead", both movies that I enjoyed very much. I really hope to see a lot more great stuff from Wright in the future. The only thing that bothered me about the movie is that Michael Cera plays such an insecure weiner, it's kind of hard seeing him as the lead in a romance story (no, I've never seen Juno, I was unprepared for this). When Cera (as Scott) says "I'm in lesbians with you", I found it very easy to take him literally! I've been told that this makes him cute, and I can see that, I just think that if I were a girl I would not find Michael Cera romantically interesting at all. Chalk it up to taste. Anyway, check out the trailer, it's great!

I had already read the first book a few months ago and I didn't really like it that much. Scott was just a despicable character in that book and it kind of turned me off. I decided to give it another shot, so I went to Chapters, and they were selling the entire series for $50! All 6 books! So now I've burned through the first 4 books. I have to say, this is one of the best Canadian comic books I've ever read. The quality of the art and story are phenomenal. It's very much inspired by Japanese manga, video games and 4-panel newspaper strips. If you haven't read much of my blog, I will tell you now that I love all of these things. It also has this young slacker feel to it that's kind of revolting and endearing at the same time. I have a feeling that I could never be friends with the characters in the comic, but it's really interesting watching them live their precious little lives.

I also found out they made a Scott Pilgrim video game...it's a side-scrolling beat-em-up with music by Anamanaguchi (The only band I know who uses an NES as an instrument!!) and art direction by Paul Robertson!! Yes, the same Paul Robertson who made "Pirate Baby's Cabana Battle Street Fight" and the "Do the Whirlwind" video!!! (among others)

This is like a recipe for a nerdy freak-out. I honestly can't think of a better treatment for the subject material than what they've done. Totally amazing. It's like this:

I was completely wrong to dismiss this series. It is very good.
