I mentioned before that I'm really bad at hands, legs, feet and lower torso. That being the case, I decided to draw more of them. I really have no natural talent for drawing, so I think I'll need to draw a thousand more before I get a better idea of how to do it. Here's a good two dozen hands for tonight:
Here's one page. It's not much to look at, but it took a long time to do. I've decided to focus on fundamentals as much as I can for the time being. That means lots of reference material, drawing by sight and trying to remember what the heck things look like. I kept it to one or two positions for tonight just to keep it simple. If I can't remember the basic structure of the hand I'm going to have a lot more trouble in the complicated positions. I think I got one or two that looked okay here, but for the most part they're pretty crap. Oh well, practice makes perfect...or better, anyway.
I picked up an interesting technique from an anatomy book of mine, at least for simple positions. The index to ring fingers form a column that extends to the arm, then the base of the thumb and pinky are added onto each side. If you look at your hand with your fingers perfectly straight you can see the lines. It's a neat little trick, but it's not going to help for very many positions, I think.
Anyway, I'll keep practicing and if all goes well then hopefully you'll be seeing comic panels up here in a few months. Joy!
I bet you think I'm going to link to the song "Willie and the Hand Jive" now that I've mentioned it in the title. HA! You're wrong. Here's a straight up techno song by an electronic producer I like named Russ Chimes. It's part 1 of a 3 part series of indie film and modern disco. IT'S HIPSTER-RIFIC!
