Buddy Guy: Skin Deep
Let me put it this way: Buddy Guy has been playing guitar since before there was such a thing as "rock and roll". Buddy Guy inspired Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Stevie Ray Vaughn among others. Buddy Guy is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Buddy Guy learned to play guitar on a wooden plank with two lengths of wire stretched between some screws. Buddy Guy is one of Rolling Stone's 100 greatest guitarists of all time, and Buddy Guy can play a crowd as well as he plays his guitar. He's a living legend.
On this particular album he plays with Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Eric Clapton and Robert Randolph. If you asked, I'm sure they would say they were honored to play with him.
There's a quote on Wikipedia from Jon Pareles from the New York Times, and he puts it much better than I can:
"Mr. Guy, 68, mingles anarchy, virtuosity, deep blues and hammy shtick in ways that keep all eyes on him... [Guy] loves extremes: sudden drops from loud to soft, or a sweet, sustained guitar solo followed by a jolt of speed, or a high, imploring vocal cut off with a rasp...Whether he's singing with gentle menace or bending new curves into a blue note, he is a master of tension and release, and his every wayward impulse was riveting."
And there you have it.
