John Hiatt: The Open Road

I first heard John Hiatt in a really unlikely place. He did a tune that usually accompanied the phrase: "I've made a huge mistake..."

I think I was kind of late getting onto that bandwagon.

"The Open Road" is a bad-ass collection of hard living, but I guess that's what you'd expect from John Hiatt. I don't really know too much about him, but from listening to his music I can tell he's one tough old rocker. He's been doing this for one hell of a long time, and he's been doing it well. This album has a lot of rock, a lot of country, a lot of blues and it's cover-to-cover excellent songwriting. He's had his songs covered by Bob Dylan, Willy DeVille, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Jesse Brand, Three Dog Night, Joan Baez, Paula Abdul, Buddy Guy, the Desert Rose Band, Jimmy Buffett, Mandy Moore, Iggy Pop, Emmylou Harris, Kathy Chiavola, Rodney Crowell, Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Rosanne Cash, Suzy Bogguss, Jewel, Aaron Neville, Jeff Healey, Keith Urban and you know, some people you may have heard of. Yeah, he's really that good.

I seem to be doing this a lot lately, but this is another album from a lesser-known legend, so I guess you'll just have to check it out for yourself.
