Matthew Barber: True Believer
Matthew Barber is one of those Canadian singer-songwriters who is just sitting on the edge of big-time fame, but just isn't quite hitting it yet. He's toured with Joel Plaskett and Buck 65, he's had a number one single (In adult contemporary. What a horrible genre name. Yuck. It sounds like a swinger party or something.) and has appeared on national TV several times. He's damn good and I'm sure that everyone who has heard him knows it already. I think it's just that not enough people have heard him yet.
I'm doing my part to remedy that by featuring him on my blog that is read on a monthly basis by maybe 2 people. Oh, the power of the internet. I was tempted to feature Tommy Castro's "Hard Believer" after this, just because the names are similar and it would be confusing. I like doing weird crap like that. Unfortunately, it's too late and I'm too lazy to do that right now. Odds are the next album I'm going to feature is either going to be *SPOILER ALERT* either Triptykon's "Eparistera Daimones" (which is probably the most evil metal album I've ever heard) or Natalie Merchant's "Leave Your Sleep" (which is a collection of children's rhymes, stories and poems set to music). How is that for variety?
Hmmm...anyway, Matthew Barber. I guess you could call it "adult contemporary", but I have no idea why you would want to call it that. It's some nice easy-paced pop with folk and country influences. His voice reminds me of Paul Simon for some weird reason. I'm probably wrong about that, but I get that feeling anyway. I'm sure he'd get a really warm reception at an open-air folk fest on a sunny day. I'm sure he already has. That said, he also rocks out a bit too, but it keeps a good balance and the album is really solid.
